Lip Aesthetics

A natural lip expression

Lip Aesthetics is a treatment considered in line with the person's needs and expectations. At Kaya Clinique it is assessed with an understanding of a measured, natural look in facial expression, and with individual planning.

Arrange a Specialist Consultation

Lip aesthetics is an umbrella term rather than a single procedure, and the options it covers work in genuinely different ways. One adds volume temporarily; another changes the structure of the upper lip surgically. This page sets out that difference, explains how a proportionate result is planned, and covers the questions that come up before any decision is made.

What does lip aesthetics cover?

Three groups of options sit under this heading, and they are not interchangeable.

The first is lip filler, in which hyaluronic acid is used to add volume or define the contour. The second is the lip lift, a surgical procedure in which skin is removed from beneath the nose to shorten the upper lip and increase the visible lip. The third group covers supportive treatments planned alongside these.

Which of these is appropriate is not decided by preference alone. What the person is dissatisfied with, the anatomy of their lips and the proportions of the surrounding face all determine which option is relevant, and in some cases the honest answer is that none of them is.

Lip filler or lip lift?

These two are the options most often confused, and the difference between them is structural rather than a matter of degree.

Lip filler
  • Hyaluronic acid is used to add volume or define contour.
  • The effect is temporary and the product is metabolised over time.
  • There is no incision and no surgical recovery.
  • The result can be adjusted at a later session.
Lip lift
  • Skin is removed from beneath the nose to shorten the upper lip.
  • The scar is placed at the base of the nose.
  • Return to social life is generally within one to two weeks.
  • Results are long lasting but surgical risks apply.
The distinction that matters is what is being addressed. Where the concern is the amount of visible lip and the distance between the nose and the lip, adding volume does not answer it. Where the concern is fullness or shape, a surgical procedure is disproportionate. The detail of the filler option is covered on the lip filler page.

How is a natural looking result planned?

Naturalness is discussed here as a question of proportion rather than as a style, because that is what actually determines how a result reads.

Lips are not assessed in isolation. The relationship between the upper and lower lip, the width of the mouth relative to the face, the shape of the nose and the chin all influence how any change will look. A result that suits one face does not transfer to another. This proportional reading is also the starting point of the wider facial aesthetics assessment, and mid-face volume is considered separately under cheek filler.

This also frames how requests for substantial volume are handled. Where the amount requested would sit outside the proportions of the face, that is discussed openly at assessment rather than accommodated and revisited later. Where the shape of the nose itself is the source of dissatisfaction, that is a separate heading assessed under rhinoplasty; where the width of the lower face is at issue, the discussion moves to masseter treatment.

A lip is never judged on its own. It is judged against the face around it, which is why the same request produces different answers in different people.

What do trend technique names mean?

Names such as Russian lips or heart-shaped lips circulate widely and describe patterns of placement rather than products or guarantees.

The important point is what a name cannot do. A technique name does not carry a promised outcome with it, because the result depends on the anatomy it is applied to rather than on the label attached to it. Where what is described is a change in skin quality rather than in shape, the headings discussed are hydration booster and skin booster, neither of which substitutes for a volume treatment.

Technique selection is therefore made by the physician according to the anatomy of the lips. Someone arriving with a specific technique in mind is asked what they want it to achieve, since that question is answerable and the name alone is not.

Is gummy smile part of this subject?

It comes up in the same conversation but it is a separate assessment.

The amount of gum visible when smiling relates to several different factors, and identifying which applies to a particular person requires examination rather than assumption. For that reason this page does not describe a treatment approach for it.

What can be said is that anyone with this concern should raise it during the consultation so that it can be assessed properly, rather than assuming it will be addressed as part of a lip treatment.

Can lip filler be reversed?

Where hyaluronic acid has been used, yes. Products of this type can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

This matters for two separate reasons. It offers a route back if the result is not what was expected, and it also forms part of the emergency response should a vascular complication occur.

It is not, however, a reason to treat the decision lightly. Reversal is itself a medical procedure requiring assessment, and the aim of careful planning is to make it unnecessary rather than to rely on it as a safety net.

Why is cold sore history asked?

Procedures involving the lips can trigger an episode in people who have had cold sores previously, which is why the question is asked before any treatment.

Where the history is present, the physician may plan preventive antiviral treatment if considered necessary. This is a straightforward precaution rather than a reason to avoid the procedure.

Where there is an active cold sore, the procedure is postponed until it has resolved. This is not negotiable and applies regardless of how the appointment was scheduled.

Cold sore history

Asked before every lip procedure; preventive treatment may be planned.

Active lesion

An active cold sore means the appointment is postponed until it resolves.

Timing

Planning around an important occasion is easier when the swelling window is known.

Expectation

What the person wants to change is established before any technique is chosen.

When is the result judged?

This applies to filler treatments in particular, and getting the timing right prevents a great deal of unnecessary worry.

01

First 24 to 72 hours

Swelling is at its most pronounced during this window and does not represent the result.

02

First days

Bruising can occur; it is a recognised finding rather than a sign that something went wrong.

03

Around 2 weeks

The final appearance generally settles by this point.

04

Assessment

The result is not evaluated before this period has passed, and no adjustment is planned earlier.

What does this mean for planning around an event?

Booking a lip treatment shortly before an important occasion is not a good plan, precisely because of the timeline above. Where a date matters, the appointment is arranged with enough margin for swelling to settle and for the result to be assessed properly, and this is discussed at the time of booking rather than afterwards.

What happens if the result is not what was expected?

The first step is waiting until the two week point, because an early impression is frequently an impression of swelling. If a genuine adjustment is needed after that, the options are discussed at a follow-up assessment, and where hyaluronic acid was used, dissolving the product is one of them.

Pricing

How are Lip Aesthetics prices determined in 2026?

There is no price list for Lip Aesthetics here; the regulation governing the promotion of health services does not allow fees to be shared.

We can still explain how the decision on Lip Aesthetics is built. These are the headings that shape the plan:

  • Whether filler or a structural procedure is on the agenda
  • For a structural procedure, the anaesthesia and recovery period
  • Where filler is used, the amount of product and the technique
  • Where there is a history of cold sores, the preventive plan that comes into play

Because these items differ between individuals, no single figure for Lip Aesthetics would reflect reality. The plan specific to you is shared at the consultation after examination.
